Memorialize a loved one

What is a Memorial?

Create a lasting tribute to a loved one by placing a celebration of their life on Memorials Today.

A memorial notice is a story or tribute to someone special that has passed on. It can include poems, pictures, funny stories, favourite hobbies, achievements, special times spent together or anything you feel best honours ones life and times.

Creating a Memorial Tribute for a loved one gives family, friends and acquaintances at home and around the world the opportunity to share in their memories and life stories, sign and view their " Memorial Tribute Book" and leave personal comments and tributes.

Memorial Tributes cost $30.00 Can. (plus 7% GST) for a text-only memorial, $40.00 Can. (plus 7% GST) for a memorial with 1 picture and $50.00 Can. (plus 7% GST) for a memorial with up to 3 pictures. Memorial Tributes remain on our Memorial page for one year. After one year, Memorial Tributes are perpetually archived in our Genealogy section. This archive will provide helpful information to present and future generations researching their genealogy or in building a family tree.

Why write a Memorial?

Writing a Memorial is an opportunity to celebrate and honour a loved one's life, a way to proclaim your love and share your feelings about a dearly departed with others. Writing a memorial can also be a therapeutic process to help you deal with your grief.
How to write a memorial

A Memorial Tribute can be a summation or overview of the deceased's life; a poem that expresses your feelings towards that person or expresses the feelings of the deceased; or is a reflection of another's life and what it meant to you. It could be even simpler, as in a letter directed to the deceased or the recounting of some shared experience(s) with the deceased.

Some of the most touching and meaningful Memorial Tributes are written from a subjective point of view and from the heart.

The first thing to do is to decide what sort of Memorial Tribute you would like to write.

If, for example, you want to write a summation of someone's life, it may be necessary to gather more information and possibly pictures. Ask friends or relatives for their recollections and stories. Next, put all this information to paper or word processor. At this point, your individual style will dictate how you want to present the information. Some people may write in a chronological order either from birth, working forward, or from the present working backward. Others may want to start at the point that they first met the deceased, or from a particular moment in that person's life or a shared experience. It really is up to you.

You may want to include a poem in your Memorial Tribute. It is always nice to include some other words with a poem simply telling how it related; whether it was a favorite of yours that seemed appropriate for the deceased or maybe it was a favorite of theirs.

Should you decide to write a letter to the deceased, or tell of your feelings for them, then our best advice is just to write from the heart.

In most cases, there will be positive things to write about. Sometimes, however, there are some people for whom this may be more difficult. If this is the case, just be honest about their positive qualities and, if you feel you must mention some of their not-so-positive qualities, its best to try to put a positive spin to it. For example, "His rough exterior hid the heart of a caring family man."

None of us welcomes the need to write a Memorial Tribute. However, most of us, at some point in our lives will be faced with the death of a loved one. You may find that you are able to get a brighter perspective on a difficult event, and actually help the healing process, through the use of writing.
