Italian born figure-skater/coach Carlo Fassi is best known for coaching gold medallists Peggy Fleming and Dorothy Hamill. Fassi was born December 20, 1929 in Milan, Italy. He died in Lausanne, Switzerland March 20, 1997 at the age of 67. Fassi began his career as a male figure-skater who went on to make his country proud when he won the Italian singles championships from 1943 to 1954. In 1953 he won the bronze medal at the world championships and a gold medal at the European championship in both 1953 and 1954. Fassi concluded his career as a competitive skater at the 1952 Winter Olympics in Oslo. Skating remained Fassi’s greatest passion. He decided to utilize his innate ability to motivate and coach. Fassi first coached Olympic Gold Medallist superstar Peggy Fleming who dominated women’s figure-skating from1964 to 1968. Fassi also went on to coach American sweetheart Dorothy Hamill, she went on to win the Gold Medal for women's figure skating in the Olympic Games in Innsbruck, Austria in 1976. Fassi has been praised and credited for being responsible for raising the level of women’s competitive figure-skating.
