Translation of Micha Nemsitsveridze’s Memorial in Georgian will follow shortly.
Snow fell on winter gardens
Galaktion Tabidze wrote Snow fell on winter gardens in 1916 as a 25 year old living in Kutaisi, Georgia's second city. It is an example of the cryptic style of much of his poetry dating from this period, while also touching on loneliness, a common theme of his. Tabidze who died in 1959 was one of the most popular Georgian poets of the last century.
Snow fell on winter gardens
Snow fell on winter gardens,
a coffin was brought out
and the standards unfolded
caught by the disheveled breeze.
The roadway was desolate,
without form and without shape.
One more coffin was brought out...
The raven's exhortation:
Let the bells toll! Bury them!
Snow fell on winter gardens
Schnee fiel auf Winter Gärten
Schnee fiel auf Winter Gärten,
ein Sarg wurde hinausgetragen
und die Umstände zeigten sich
eingefangen durch eine zerzauste Briese.
Die Strasse war ohne Trost,
ohne Form und ohne Kontur.
Ein Sarg mehr wurde hinausgetragen...
Der Raben Gekrächze:
Lasst die Glocken läuten! Begrabt sie!
Schnee fiel auf Winter Gärten.
