Comments: I've been kicking myself for years now. I always wanted to go see Doug and the Slugs; they were always playing somewhere around the Lower Mainland it seemed. I put it off thinking "they'll be back"! Was very shocked and saddened by Doug's passing, hope time has helped his grieving family. I have all the Doug and The Slugs songs on my IPod!
Thanks for the memories, Traci |

Comments: My Deepest Sympathy I used to go to almost every single show Doug and The Slugs did in the Lower Mainland, and what a great time every show was! I'd even go to shows by myself, because I wouldn't miss a single one. Doug was kind enough to let me go backstage on a number of occasions, and he was always very kind and just a nice guy to me. I always got the impression Doug appreciated every single fan at every single show. Knowing Doug Bennett is not walking on this Earth often fills me with sadness. I still listen to Doug and The Slugs tunes almost every day, and I find myself sad, but also smiling because of who Doug was and all the great shows I got to experience. God Bless You Doug. |

Comments: While listening to a CBC radio program over the Christmas period, I was shocked to hear the next half hour would feature songs of the late Doug Bennett. Needless to say I was shocked at his passing and my thoughts immediately went back to 1988 when I was blessed to see Doug as the lead in London's Grand Theatre production of Rock and Roll. Doug will certainly be missed |

It is sad when we lose an icon in the music industry and I try to go to see all the older rock acts from the sixties seventies and eighties. I will have Doug's music to listen to and thank God and 'Doug and the Slugs' for their music made over the years. A true icon of the Canadian Music Industry will be sadly missed by all his fans. |

Comments: I will always remember you It's taken me a while to know what to write, but here I am, finally.
Thanks for the wonderful memories, music and that delightful sharp-wit humour of yours.
Back in the late '70s, my friends and I use to attend many of your shows and meet up with you afterwards. It was a real pleasure meeting you for the first time. I found you to be kind and inspiring,(sometimes even wacky) as I was in a graphics design program at VCC and volunteering at CFRO. You gave me a sense of direction and encouragement that I'll never forget.
I was meaning to get out to one of your recent shows around the Greater Vancouver area in hopes that I could meet you again and have you sign my "Too Bad" 45 - the one in green and red. I didn't expect you would really remember me, but I just thought it would be nice to see you perform again.
Well, words cannot describe the heavy feeling of sadness and regret I feel in my heart over your passing. I hope it was a peaceful one. I didn't know that you were not well all this time. God give peace to your family and friends with knowing that you truly made a lot of people happy, and that our loss is Heaven's gain. Rest for now Doug, and then show 'em how to make it work in God's Country. I'll see you there someday and perhaps I can learn what these "Twist nights" were about.
With Care and My Deepest Sympathies,

Comments: My thoughts go out to the family Music is a powerful memory trigger, and every song I hear Doug sing, gives me the gift of a recollection of my past I can always cherish. That was his gift to me.
Now, I have an additional memory that will always be with me when I hear Doug's voice on my stereo or over the airwaves; it will be of the man that brought so much fun and joy to the people he touched with his music.

Comments: I cry for the loss of an old friend and Mentor. Doug was on his way to play for the Hotel I work at in Okotoks when I got the call from his band mates. His message was" Sorry, Lori, but I don't think I will be able to make it tonight" In 20 years of friendship and business, this is the first gig (that I know of) he missed. The local newspaper here did an interview with me, those who would like to read it can email me.
My Heart goes out to Doug's Family, and to all the Slugs, I know there is now an empty place, where laughter was once loud, and often.
For all the kindness and hospitality that was shown to me when I worked out of the Bennettainment office, Thank You, Nancy. Peace be with you. |

Comments: I was profoundly influenced by the Slugs and their D.I.Y. spirit. The band members always had the time of day for me. I was an 18 year-old determined to be a singer/songwriter so I was moonlighting as a stage tech to get some experience. My moonlighting lasted five years with Barney Bentall and my first gig was opening for the Slugs on New Years eve 1981. I ran the follow-spot on Doug. You have to focus pretty hard on someone when you do that and I learned a whole pile of tricks on that fateful night. I kept coming back for more and Johnny Burton eventually took me under his wing and produced one of my early band's demos. From a songwriter and performer's point of view...Doug was the shit. In my brief conversations with him he was warm and fun and playfully supportive.
Last night I took part in his memorial and to be even asked to sing one of his songs, in that situation, was the greatest musical honour of my life. Thank you Doug. |

I never had the pleasure of seeing Doug live but have heard lots of great comments of shows. I saw Trooper last night and they played a song for Doug and paid tribute to a fine musician, and great songwriter. I am sorry to the families, and can understand what it's like to lose someone so young as my father died 3 years ago at 55. He will be missed, but never forgotten, and we'll here his soul in his songs forever.

Comments: Our Deepest Sympathy We frist saw Doug and his Band at Ontario Place and loved his Show, great performance, we were hooked. Years later I had the Honor of Doug and The Slugs playing at my Bar, Mud Hens, where they put on a superb show and after we got to talk with Doug and his band til 5 p.m. What a great man, joking with us telling stories and later my wife and he decided to have a face slapping contest, all in fun . Doug and Slugs played for us again in 2001, with his still great sense of humor. Doug was a person when you meet him, you will not forget him, nor will we.

Comments: Without Doug and the Slugs, I'd probably be pumping gas right now. I was a "roadie" with some East Coast bands when I met the Slugs at Zapata's lounge in Halifax in about 1981. I soon ended up on the road with them, carrying their stuff, hooking it up and taking a small part in the performances, driving the truck, mixing sound, setting up the amps and what ever else needed doing.
Doug was great at encouraging his employees to expand their skills, adopt a professional attitude and be of value to the show. This value was rewarded monetarily of course, but also with friendship, respect and deep caring, which was demonstrated when I became very ill while on the road with the Band and needed hospitalisation.
I continued working with Doug and the Slugs on and off through to 1986 when we blasted from Vancouver to St. Johns and back in just less then 3 months, it was grueling and the road manager Ken Brault came up with the following: "...if we only played the nice places we'd be home in two weeks".
My involvement with the Doug and the Slugs resulted in my moving to Vancouver and finding love...although not enough work. Eventually I moved back to Toronto then to the US ( where I now reside and provide professional tech services to musicians).
Although I am more than 15 years removed and thousands of miles away I remain a fan of the music that Doug and the guys created...and the laughs that continue today.
Memories of occurrences public and private, the goofy jokes, songs and shows, the themes, the audiences allowed and encouraged to bring their own to the shows.
To me, Doug Bennett and the Slugs offered more, friendship and a career start.
Doug was the leader, collaborator, encourager and creator. His effect on so many lives within and without the music world will never really be known, but is substantial. As I read through other posts, I remembered specific shows we did, and just look at all the places Doug went, Yes it was a job, but also a calling.
Thanks Doug, I wouldn't be Me with out You.
These are the times that we miss those who were friends back there and then, Simon, Steve, Wally, Richard, John, Bill, Joe, Wayne, Colin, Kenner, Mikie and dear Frankie. I am lucky to know you.
Condolences to Doug's family.

Doug, I only met you and the band once.
R.I.P Doug........you made many people happy with your voice and songs.
You came to our small Newfoundland out-port town on Nov 24 /1999.
It was the first and last time a big group came to our town.
I was very proud to have 'doug and the Slugs' play at my small bar.
There are great memories when you and the band had Dinner, showers, and a road snack@ my parents house.....Mom(R.I.P..pass away Dec 14/2000) and Dad were so proud that you spent time at their home.........and your Picture hangs proudly in dads house.
I Only wish I could of had you back again, but you never made it back to Newfoundland............so I gest that our bar 'CapeSide Lounge' now Gypsies RoadHouse, was the last bar that you and the slugs played in NEWFOUNDLAND ?.
Doug....thanks so very much.......I knew your music long before I meet you........and I will always smile when I hear one of your songs.
Sleep will my friend..........

Forever great memories of watching the band backstage with the fellow wives. Having our babies around the same time. Hearing all the great antics, and my ex's big splash! If it weren't for Doug and the Slugs, i wouldn't have moved to Vancouver with Kenner, had Tropical Rainstorm as our song, and had a wonderful daughter, Amanda. Much love and great memories of Doug chasing Amanda with a crab, during one of Doug and Nancy's wonderful dinners. The kids birthday parties, and especially the memory of Doug kissing my mum after a show at Maple Leaf Gardens, (she still swoons). Nancy, Della, Shea, Devon much love to you all. I will always remember Doug giving me my 15 minutes of fame making me sing "Who Knows How to Make Love Stay" in front of a packed night club in Victoria in the late 80's. I was so nervous as I was very reluctant and Doug guided me perfectly through it and to my amazement I got a standing O at the end. It was a highlight of my life that will always be with me.
Thank you Doug for some great music and humour. I bet there is one awesome band jamming up there.

He loved to make the night enjoyable He always had fun with the crowds and his band no matter if it was under the hot lights or out in the cold. He also voiced opinions about things that he did not like and more often then not they were the same opinon as the crowds that watched him.He liked to try new things in his songs as well. I tryed to goto a concert of his everytime he came to town.

Comments: A tremendous loss. I first met Doug when he & the Slugs played the university pub night in the early 80s. I have seen them countless times and have loved every minute -- from "She's Lookin' at Me" to making us sing "White Christmas" in an outdoor concert in 30 degree heat. I'm taking Cognac and Bologna to the infamous desert island. Doug was the ultimate performer who touched everyone in the audience (sometimes literally!). I am sure he is entertaining those other souls he is with now.

I have such great memories of every single time I saw Doug & the Slugs perform in the 80's. The highlight for me was being able to chat with Doug after a performance of Rock and Roll. I was an early '77 fan of DATS, and will remain a fan forever. I can't imagine the loss you are suffering at this time and until you join him no doubt. He was a unique soul...and a brave one. Cherish the memories good and bad....knowing if he had to do it all again it would have been just the same. No regrets.
He lived life to the fullest measure and you should carry his qualities out into the world. He suffers no more. Remember there are tens of thousands who are carrying you on our heavy hearts and our uplifted wings. May God and Goddess bless you all for the rest of your beautiful lives. Comments: I saw the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix in the '60s...James Taylor, The Band and the Moody Blues in the '70s...ZZ Topp, the Kinks and Doug & the Slugs in the '80s. Far and away the best live act of them all was Doug & the Slugs. Doug's passing is a tremendous loss to the Canadian music industry and to fans nationwide.

Comments: I grew up in Montreal and had the good fortune of catching many great bands throught the 70's. I moved to Halifax in 82 and the first show I saw was Doug n his Slugs at the ole Misty Moon on Kempt Road. The house was jammers and smokey. I thought I'd seen everyone until that night. Up close n dirty, Doug blew me away with his tunes and the way in which he worked the crowd. Everyone had a smile, ringing ears and a horse throat from laughing and screaming. Every time there after the band was in town we'd go out of our way to catch the show. I have a room wall papered in album covers and Cognac and Bologna proudly hangs among the cardboard and vinyl collection. People who pass through the room always give it a good once over. Those who know their tunes often point out the album, smile and say, " now there was a great Canadian band, I remember the night we seen Doug n the Slugs, what a night ". And we share a story or two of a memorable night on the town, big !!it eatin grin and a wink.
My scincere condolences to Mrs. Bennett and her daughter's |

Comments:
I was saddened to hear that Doug passed away today. I came to know the band when Popaganda was released and have been a fan ever since. I was privileged to finally see them in person at the Calgary Stampede in 2003 and even though the years had passed on, Doug and the Slugs could still put on a show.
Day by Day is a song of inspiration that I keep in mind daily. Doug's talents have made a mark on the music industry and will forever make him immortal in our hearts and minds. May his soul rest in peace and that his wife Nancy and their girls take solace that we all share in their loss today.

Doug had an uncanny ability to make a true connection with the audience. Comments: My ex introduced me to Slug Rock; I was immediately hooked. Over the years, I think we attended and danced at every Doug & the Slugs performance in Ottawa, indoors & out. We also collected every Doug & the Slugs album, & later CDs. We introduced our friends & family to his music. Doug's voice & songs swept the range from poignant ballads to fun songs to raunchy dance hall rock. Seeing Doug & the guys perform was always a high energy good time & hearing Slug rock on the occasional TV show was an unexpected treat. Doug was the same age as I am; his untimely death leaves me sad but with many great memories. The Canadian music scene will never forget his contribution and neither will I. May his family find healing in the warm words of all of us who appreciated this remarkable character who entertained us so well. |

Comments: Well bless that groovy old guy...
Back in '80, I was in Vancouver when an uncle had asked me if I'd heard of Doug 'n the Slugs. Cognac and Bologna,
with that faded album cover,
introduced me to some great local party music. It wasn't until 1994 in Edmonton on a Sidetrack Cafe Tuesday night when I insisted to my wife I was finally going to see these guys! I was stunned at how well they entertained. Doug, with this hair pulled back tight in a pony tail, belted out the tunes that night to an over-enthusiastic crowd just astounded at his immense singing talent. I, myself couldn't resist to grab his hand for a second's moment while he sang on stage to the tune of "Too Bad."
My imbibed composure tried to restrain the appreciation I felt for being just lucky enough to shake his hand. He looked down at me without breaking a note, managed a grin and then continued on with what he always did best. He sang incredible that night, and left a memory in my mind as one of the best and ...yes, inspiring male singers in Canadian music.
I think I can comfortably say, that Doug left our world knowing full well he had accomplished his goal...a feat not easily attained by common man. He made us feel good and proud and cheerful. How many other bands can do that? God be with you Doug and thanks for the great ride. My sincerest and deepest sympathies to the families of Mr. Bennett.
Sincerely,
Ric S.

Comments: What a huge loss........I never missed the chance to see the guys when they came to Ontario, and over the years got the opportunity to know them. Best memory - saw them perform in Guelph two nights before I gave birth to my twins. I was getting pretty tired, Doug arranged for a chair for me to sit on up by the stage. I ended up having to leave early, but he sang "Must Be the Rain", one of my favourites before I left. Two nights later we had identical twin boys and I love to tell Gregory Douglas where his name came from. God Bless to Nancy and the girls. |

Comments: We will always remember you Doug, you will be missed. The news hit me like a 50amp fuse blew up under my chair. In the early eighties, Doug Bennett drew a couple of cartoon caricitures of me and a couple of my friends, . I was a budding artist and musician at the time, and we always saved our money to see Doug and The Slugs whenever we could. Mr. Bennett gave me valuble advice about my career choices and always encouraged me to follow my dreams. He was always kind, funny and very genuine, and unlike many high profile celebrities, he always made time for the small kid waiting around the dressing room to talk to him. Whenver there was a marker around, I usually got a cartoon of myself, and he always gave my friends and myself posters and samples of Slug Swag. There is only one person who unconditionally and continually let me know I was following the right path when I was following my dreams, that person is Doug Bennett. The world is never going to be the same, we'll miss you Doug, and will forever remember you, in our hearts, our fondest and most fun musical memories, and in the webpage I am creating honoring your memory. Goodbye my friend, you were truly the genuine article.

Enjoyed many many shows throughout the years and you always knew when you went to see Doug that if you weren't happy when you came in you would be when you left! Thank you to Doug for being such an awesome entertainer! Most recently we have made a point of catching Doug's show at Merritt the last few times the group has been there.. always one of our highlights..!!!

Comments: We will always remember him One great summer many years ago I was working a summer job in Campbell River, BC, and saw the 'Slugs perform....a few weeks later returned home to Kingston, Ont to find that the 'Slugs were in town so I had to go....and then about a month later on a University road trip to Halifax to watch a football game sure enough, there was Doug....and we had to go.
A tireless touring muscian who put on a great show every time I saw it.....one of the few bands that connects with their audience every time out. |

Comments: So long Doug. We spent two great years together in Montreal. I'll always remember the time we went trolling for chicks, and in an era of folks dancing separated and doing the watusi or whatever, you said to that chick, "there is no point to dancing unless you get to touch." I'll also remember that time in the bar when you stood on the table and sang for an hour with everyone else acting as the backup. Thanks for introducing me to Bruce Springsteen, Smokey Robinson and Chris Kristofferson. Thanks for introducing me to Jack Daniels, with POT chasers. Thanks for your sardonic and biting wit. Thanks for the time before and after the Slugs. I'll always remember you and the little rose tattoo on your hand. Tchau, adios and tell God he is a f---ker for me |

Comments: I first heard of and saw Doug and the Slugs when visiting Whistler in 1979. I was fortunate enough to see the fellas play a gig in the very small bar that was at the Whistler Keg Restaurant. It was a great show! In later years, the Slugs became better known, and had their hits. I saw them at least two other times in Ottawa during those years.
Doug sure liked to have fun, and I hope he's having a great time on the big stage in the sky! |

Then I had a chance to take in a show at The Shamrock on St. Patrick's Day this year but didn't. Now I'm kicking myself. I missed a chance to see one of the best live acts in Canadian rock history. Comments: Forever in our hearts I was in Okotoks the night of Oct. 9th and so looking forward to seeing the show that night where he was scheduled to play. I have never had the chance to see him before but enjoyed those catchy songs for so many years - one of my favorite bands in the early 80s' - and I even commented to my friend who I went with that night that I had always wanted to see him but never had - I was looking so forward to it. :( Then we heard he was ill and that he was in hospital - what a shock to hear of his passing - so tragic to have lost such an awesome musician and I'm sure a truly wonderful person.
Doug, you will live on in your music always.
Thoughts & prayers to the family.

An era has ended.

Comments: My Thoughts Are With You The music of Doug & The Slugs has brought a smile to my face since I was a kid working in Banff and my musically-deaf roommate tried to argue that "Too Bad" was a punk song.
I had the pleasure of meeting & photographing the band some 15 years later in a little bar in Lake Louise and that night Doug's energy lit the mountains like a midday sun. I don't know what the music industry will do without Doug, but I will certainly have a moment of silence every time his voice comes out of the radio... then I'll sing along like he was standing right next to me again.
God Bless, Doug. You'll be missed. |

Comments: My Sincere Condolences Doug was such a part of my growing up in Vancouver. I saw him and the band I'm sure at least 50 times at various venues over the years. From days when I had to sneak into clubs because I was under 19, to the last time I saw him perform in Revelstoke around six years ago, Doug never failed to entertain.
Nobody dressed like Doug, nobody sang like Doug, nobody put words together like Doug. I am truly saddened by the loss of this man.
At the age of 43, I truly believe no other performer will ever make the same type of impact on me. Not because they won't try, but because nobody will match the talent, enthusiasm and kindness that was a part of Doug.
God Bless Doug Bennett

Comments: I originally followed Doug and the Slugs in the 70's when I discovered I had the same first and last name as Doug. I liked the tongue in cheek attitude of the band and enjoyed seeing them perform at Ontario Place. It's "too bad" that we've lost him at such a young age. |

Comments: My deepest condolences to Nancy and family.
I knew Doug about 20 years ago when I was with A&M records.
He and the band were always a joy to work with.
We always had fun and the guys played great.
Everyone left feeling good.
It is never easy when we lose a loved one but this transition is a part of life for all of us.
If you don't mind I will pray for you to have strength and courage during this difficult time.
Bless you all.
Bruce

Comments: My Deepest Regards Thanks for your great songwriting and performances Doug. Your music style was fun and uplifting and no one else did it better. I had the great fortune of enjoying one of your performances at the Forum in the 80s and was hoping to catch you again when you came back to Toronto. At least I have one great memory. |

Comments: I followed and listened to Doug from the early 80's. In my opinion he was by far the BEST CANADIAN entertainer there was. He was always quick with a smile and very funny when on stage or just speaking one on one with his many fans. Will miss your entertaining personality very much Doug. God speed. condolences to his wife and family.
